Gantry

Fifa World Cup 2010 Gantry - One of sixteen designers selected to compete and design a Gantry for the 2010 South African Fifa World Cup and Confederations Cup. A gantry consists of a large 3-dimensional object used to advertise the Fifa World Cup tournament, the spirit of the game and one of its main sponsors (in this case MTN). Traditionally, one gantry is made for every Fifa World Cup tournament in the host country. My design makes use of a massive three-dimensional billboard that encourages fans to scream ‘Goal!’ every time they drive under it. The billboard is designed to make the word ‘Goal!’ sound so loud that it appears to circumnavigate the earth, traveling through every continent, country, city, home and back again. The gantry is covered in low-density, synthetic grass, designed to move in the wind, mimicking the effect of a crowded stadium. The corporate yellow MTN typography is contrasted against the sky-blue background, making the letters appear to float off the surface of the billboard, eventually fading into the landscape. The letters are designed to light up a bright yellow in the evenings and can be lit individually, in sequence and when a goal is scored.
